Game Overview

Hazzy New Year is a 2–6 player dice roll-and-write game for ages 8 and up. Each player has a personal board with a calendar (January–December) and 4 squares. Using pencils and erasers, players record dice results and combine them to mark months on their calendar. The number of dice in play varies by player count (5 dice for 2 or 4 players, 6 for 5 players, 7 for 3 or 6 players).

Goal of the Game

Be the first player to mark all 12 months on your calendar without leaving any dice results unused.

Gameplay

The game is played in manches, each made up of multiple rounds. At the start of each round, the first player rolls all the dice. Going clockwise, each player picks one available die and writes its value in one of their 4 squares. In 2- and 3-player games, the last player picks two dice, then play reverses counterclockwise back to the first player. One die is always left over and discarded at the end of every round. Once per round, a player may mark an X in one square and skip taking a die that round, leaving only 3 results to manage at end of manche.

End of Round

Rounds continue until all players have filled their 4 squares (or marked an X). The role of first player passes to the left each round.

End of Manche

Players combine their square values — individually or by adding any of them together — to form numbers between 1 and 12, each corresponding to a month to mark on the calendar. Any leftover unused results trigger a penalty: for each unused result, the player must cross out the highest-valued month already marked on their board. All squares are then cleared and a new manche begins, with the first player role passing to the left.

End of Game

The game ends when a player marks all 12 months.

Tie-breaker

If multiple players complete their calendar, the winner is whoever marked the lowest-valued month during that final round. If still tied, victory is shared.
